Does Crystal Palace run academy trials?
Crystal Palace Academy, Copers Cope Road · Beckenham, south London
No open trials, in the club's own words. But Palace is the most open Category 1 academy in London, because its charity arm runs a tiered pathway that anyone can join. Tier 1 development centres are open access and bookable for ages 5 to 16. Strong players are invited up to Tier 2, then to the Emerging Talent Centre, which feeds the pre-academy. The foundation has reported more than 30 players moving through that route into the academy.
4 ways players actually get in.
Season-long assessment through the tiers rather than a trial day. Half-termly reviews decide moves between tiers.
- 01Palace for Life pathway, Tier 1
Open access, all abilities, full season September to June, ages 5 to 16, from £335 a season. Players are assessed through the year and can be invited to Tier 2.

Invite only. Tier 2 is the performance squad. Tier 3, the Emerging Talent Centre, is based at the academy for years 4 to 8 and is where academy coaches and scouts watch directly. Progression leads to a pre-academy registration.
- 03Scouted at school, county or district football
The club says scouting is its main source. Scouts cover school, county, regional and district games and tournaments across south London and Kent.

A coach can email the academy a player profile, playing history and fixture list. If interested, a scout attends a match, possibly without notice, then approaches the club manager and the parents.

- EPPP limit: 1 hour travel U9 to U11, 90 minutes U12 to U16
- Under 8? The club sends you to Palace for Life. Book Tier 1 directly, no invitation needed.
- Ask which tier the invitation is for. Tier 2 is still the foundation, not the academy. The Emerging Talent Centre is the step before pre-academy.
- Reviews happen at the end of each half term. Ask what the next review date is and what they are looking for.
- The travel rule applies from the moment of academy registration: one hour at U9 to U11.
